About the artist

In her work, Jan explores the qualities of the media, the use of color and the interpretation of each subject in a personal way.

Her subject matter tends to be about her everyday surroundings - often focusing on animals, birds and nature. She feels a special connection with animals, and strives to depict some of their unique qualities in the paintings. Since she is also an illustrator, her paintings often have a narrative quality and her illustrations tend to be whimsical with a painterly feel. Strong color and conceptual imaginary imagery are important in her work.

Jan's background is in illustration and graphic design with studies at the University of California and Art Center College of Design, with several years of more recent oil painting studies. In San Diego, she has shown her work at the annual Little Italy and Libety Station Artwalks, Art on 30th Gallery, San Diego Botanic Garden, Woods Gallery. Her work is shown in Colorado at the La Veta Gallery on Main, and in San Diego at Art and Soul Gallery, Encinitas and Silver Creek Gallery in El Cajon.

Illustration clients have been national and international and include Hay House, Inc., Marks and Spencer, Hay House, Blue Mountain Arts, Schurman Design, Harcourt Education among others.
